7/16 SHOW: Jessica Lum in VA

Today, friend and former classmate Jessica Lum opened her solo show at the Armory Gallery here at our Alma Mater, Virginia Tech. Conversations with Jess features new work Jess has made in honest and open dialogue with herself and her audience.

12" x 13" $500
(with a fantastic passage of the embraced couple in the center)

Jess' ongoing journey as an artist in search of an artistic community has led her in exciting directions, from abandoning oil paints to embracing bold swatches of color and pattern in fabric and hand-stitched embroidery. The importance of craft beside concept has fueled the creation of layered, tapestry-like pieces that beg to be touched.

12" x 14" $500

Precise lines drawn in perfect stitches articulate salt-soaked watercolors framed in burlap and damasks.

10" x 9" $300

The highlight of the opening was an unrehearsed discussion between Jess, gallery director Deborah Sim, and reception guests. Video and audio recordings of the conversation were made (with assistance) by yours truly. What emerged is well worth sharing so stay tuned for a podcast and video version to be made available soon.

20" x 29" $600

Work is reasonably-priced, and fabric is hot in the contemporary art scene, so I encourage those in the area to see the show. If you're at a greater remove from the action, Jess' website is chock full of images and prices for work in the show.

12" x 14" $500

The show runs through August 24th. Check it out!
