7/16 ART: Erik Abel

Oh the wonderful things you find whilst poking around on the internet! Things like sensational Portland artist Erik Abel.

A freelance graphic designer for the board sports industry, Abel's mix of clear graphic elements, sketchy underdrawing, and loose paint application are eminently appealing. The deceptively simple compositions belie the assured handling of contrast, and the imagery - suggesting totemic and Pre-Colombian sources - is (to me, at least) reminiscent of Blaine Fontana without being derivative.

Most of Abel's work is priced in the $300-$600 sweet spot for nascent collecting. You can buy directly from Erik at his website, www.abelarts.com, at Venice Contemporary and Wind Up.

With representation and/or upcoming shows at some great West Coast galleries like Thinkspace and Cannibal Flower, Abel makes a sound investment for the monetarily motivated, and also one which should continue to please the eyes for a long time to come.

Me likey muy mucho.
