"I'm not trying to change the world. I'm just reacting to the world trying to change me." So Anthony Lister, born in Australia and a recent Brooklyn emigre, explains the impetus behind his work. And that reaction is producing some amazing art!
This guy's international reputation is on the rise with shows in NYC, LA, SF, Portland, Milan, Sidney, and London in 2007 alone. Thursday (7/5) his latest show, Cracker Got Snapped by the Pops, opened at Gallery Fifty24SF in San Fran and runs through the rest of the month.
$1300
This guy's a new discovery to me, so I can't tell you much, but there's plenty written about him at the various galleries representing him, and I refer you to the respective bios they've made available. There's an unedited and near-pointless "interview" with him over at Fecal Face where I first heard of him, but I suggest you just check out the video at the bottom of the article.
$2350
Price-wise, work at the 24SF show ranges from $700 to $2350 which, if I had, would be worth every penny. Lister's work is as good as, if not better than, most of the stuff I've seen at the last few Whitneys, and his low-brow, pop subjects are appropriately savaged by his commanding line work. And though he identifies himself as a painter, I commend the videos he's made, many available at You Tube, to you (search for videos by "findmrlister").
Now is the time to buy because these will not get cheaper.
